Millet: the forgotten seed to rediscover for healthy and tasty cooking
Discovered in an organic section somewhat by chance, millet clearly deserves more spotlight. Less well-known than rice or quinoa, this ancient grain is nevertheless a true nutritional treasure. That's why at @testooka , we decided to test it, taste it, and above all, film it to make you want to try it at home!
What exactly is millet?
Millet is a gluten-free grain, rich in fiber, iron, and magnesium, and particularly easy to digest. It comes in the form of small yellow balls with a very mild flavor. It's an excellent alternative to more traditional grains in a balanced or vegetarian diet.
On our TikTok (@testooka), we compared it to quinoa: same ease of cooking, same versatility... but with a slightly more melting texture and a rustic side that we love. The video is available right here: see the video test .
How to cook millet simply?
Just like rice or bulgur! Simply rinse it, then cook it for 15 to 20 minutes in twice its volume of water. Once cooked, you can use it:
-
As a base for Buddha bowls
-
In a cold salad with crunchy vegetables
-
In a sweet version for a healthy breakfast
You can also lightly dry-roast it before cooking to enhance its flavor. We shared a first recipe in our Instagram story, and a short video is also available on YouTube Shorts if you want to see the final texture.
Why does millet deserve a place in your kitchen?
Millet ticks all the boxes:
-
Rich in essential nutrients
-
Naturally gluten-free
-
Easy to digest
-
Low calorie
-
Cheap
It's a perfect cereal if you want to diversify your diet or simply try a forgotten ingredient in the cupboard. It's now found almost everywhere, but you can also order it online on Amazon here or on eBay here .
Our verdict after testing
At Testooka , we tried it in a savory version with roasted vegetables and a drizzle of olive oil, and honestly? It's a success. The taste is mild, not too strong, perfect to accompany any dish. We really think millet deserves to be brought back into fashion. And if you want to see our daily food tests, we're also on Instagram , TikTok , YouTube and even on X (formerly Twitter) .
